RE: UNDERWRITING - REVISION TO CONVEYANCE TAX RETURN FORM OP-236

Dear Associates:

The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (“DRS”) now offers an online, fillable PDF version of the conveyance tax return. The form is two pages in length and includes separate copies for the DRS and town clerk. It must be printed and signed in the same manner as the previous carbon form and delivered to the town clerk along with the deed and requisite tax payment. The existing carbon forms will be discontinued but will be accepted by town clerks until the current supply of such forms is exhausted.

The CT DRS website offers access to the new forms and related documents as follows:

Form OP-236

OP-236i (Instructions)

OP-236 Schedule A (Grantors)

OP-236 Schedule B (Grantees)

While the new form requires an entry in the “Taxpayer Identification Number” fields once a Grantor’s/Grantee’s name is entered, C.G.S. §12-497 provides that no town clerk may refuse to record any deed, instrument or writing if the tax return does not include social security account information.
